Sample prices for a 7-day rental. Final price, deposit and terms are confirmed on Localrent.
No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Airport & city pickup
Desks at the airport and in the city centre.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Most driving here is the TF-1 motorway plus a climb up to Teide. Pick by group size and how far inland you plan to go, not by looks.
Economy
Cheap to run and easy to park in the resort. Fine for two people sticking to the coast.
Automatic
Easier on the climb up to Teide via Vilaflor. Automatics are limited here, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with room for luggage on the day trips.
Luxury
A roomier, more comfortable drive for the longer runs north. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Playa de las Americas works fine on foot for the beaches, the Veronicas strip and the seafront promenade, so you do not need a car to enjoy the resort itself. The value of car hire in Playa de las Americas is reaching the rest of the island - the volcanic interior and the quieter coast - on your own schedule rather than waiting on a TITSA bus.
Most short trips run on the TF-1 motorway, which is wide and easy. The interior roads up to Teide are slower but well surfaced.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The big one is Teide. From the Los Cristianos and Las Americas area you go up Mount Teide via Arona and Vilaflor, a drive of about 47 km, and you can stop in Vilaflor, the highest town in Spain, on the way. Allow most of a day for the climb, the national park and the way back down.
Los Gigantes, with its cliffs, is about 25 minutes north on the TF-1 to exit 87 for Playa San Juan, then the TF-46 and TF-47. Los Gigantes sits about 30 kilometres from the resort and is close to the rural village of Masca.
Masca is the scenic detour, reached through Santiago del Teide. The TF-436 to Masca is very narrow and full of hairpin turns, so it offers some of the best views on the island but is a challenge to drive. Go early, before the buses and the crowds fill the few parking spots.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital, is roughly an hour north on the TF-1 for a city day. Each of these places has more detail on the island hub.
Driving tips for the south
You can collect in the resort itself - several suppliers keep offices and hotel desks along Avenida Rafael Puig Lluvina and Avenida Antonio Dominguez. The closest airport, Tenerife South (TFS), is the other common pickup point and usually the cheapest. It takes around 15 minutes to drive from Tenerife South Airport to the resort, leaving the TF-1 at exit 73. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold.
A point in your favour here: the Canary Islands have no low-emission zone of the kind you find in mainland cities, so there is no sticker rule to worry about driving into town or around the south.
The south stays warm and dry all year, so there is no off-season for the beach. Roads are quietest from late spring into early summer and again in autumn, when rates ease off the Christmas and February peaks. One thing to plan around: you can leave a sunny beach in the south and be in cloud at Teide within about an hour, so pack a layer for the mountain. Whenever you come, booking a couple of weeks ahead is where the savings are, especially for an automatic.
Yes. Several suppliers have offices and hotel desks in Playa de las Americas. Tenerife South Airport (TFS) is the other common pickup and usually the cheapest, about a 15-minute drive from the resort via exit 73 of the TF-1.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Taking the car by ferry to Gran Canaria, La Gomera or other islands must be agreed with the supplier in advance, and not all of them allow it.
It is often simpler to hire a separate car on the second island. If you plan a ferry, check the terms with our support team.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Playa de las Americas and return at TFS or in Santa Cruz.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
The route up via Arona and Vilaflor is well surfaced and steady, just slow with bends near the top, and an automatic makes the climb easier. The road to Masca is the tricky one - very narrow with many hairpins, best driven early and slowly.
Automatics cost more and sell out first, so book one early if you want one.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
