Aranjuez is a royal town 45 kilometres south of Madrid, famous for its magnificent Royal Palace, ornate Baroque gardens, and the fertile riverside fields that produce Spain's finest asparagus and strawberries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape. Most visitors come from Madrid for a day trip, but a rental car makes it easy to combine Aranjuez with Toledo — just 40 kilometres away — Cuenca, and the wide Castilian plateau. Madrid Airport is about 45 minutes north.
