La Manga is a thin sandbar that runs about 24 km along the Murcia coast, between 200 metres and 1.5 km wide, separating the Mar Menor lagoon from the Mediterranean. A single road, the Gran Via, runs the full length from Cabo de Palos and links every urbanisation on the strip. That layout is exactly why a hire car pays off here: the apartments, beaches and the Tomas Maestre marina are spread over the whole 24 km, and buses run end to end but on their own schedule.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Cartagena is the obvious half-day out: it sits about 33 miles from the strip, roughly a 38-minute drive. The port city of Murcia is a bit further inland, under an hour on the motorway. Both have their own pages.
Closer in, the car earns its keep on the strip itself. Cabo de Palos at the southern tip has the lighthouse and the dive boats, the Calblanque beaches sit just south of the entrance road, and the lagoon side has the calm, shallow water that families come for. One pickup covers the lot, and you can be back at the apartment the same afternoon.
From Murcia Airport you reach the strip on the AP-7, then take exit 800 towards La Manga and follow the signs to your urbanisation. Addresses here are given by kilometre marker on the Gran Via - "Km 3", "Km 11", "Km 17" - so note yours before you arrive.
Parking is the one thing to plan for. Most apartment blocks and hotels have their own garage or private space, and that is the easiest option in July and August when the open spaces fill. The town has added free public car parks in recent years, including a 279-space free car park next to the fire station off Calle Comercial Casino. In winter the strip is quiet and parking is easy anywhere.
Quick checks at pickup
Most car hire for La Manga starts at Murcia Airport (RMU), where the desks and the cheapest rates are, and the drive in is around 40 minutes. Suppliers serving the area include Goldcar and Centauro. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold at the desk.
Spring (April to June) and September are the easiest stretches - warm, with the lagoon still swimmable and the Gran Via far quieter than peak. July and August are the busy months: rates climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and parking on the strip gets tight, so book several weeks ahead. Winter is the cheapest time, and a car still makes sense for Cartagena and the inland trips once the beach crowds have gone.
