La Palma is the greenest of the Canary Islands, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve blanketed by ancient laurel forests, dramatic volcanic calderas, and black-sand beaches. Unlike the busier resort islands, La Palma rewards slow, independent travel — a rental car is the only practical way to explore the winding mountain roads, the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, and the traditional villages scattered across its interior. The island is also home to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, with some of the clearest skies in Europe. La Palma Airport (SPC) is on the east coast.

In Santa Cruz de la Palma and Los Llanos de Aridane, parking is generally free in residential streets; some central areas have restricted zones. In smaller inland villages parking is informal and free.
La Palma's roads are mostly narrow mountain routes — take your time and use passing places. The LP-1 and LP-2 roads circle parts of the island; interior routes to the Caldera de Taburiente require slow, careful driving. Petrol stations in Santa Cruz de la Palma, Los Llanos de Aridane, and along main LP roads.
