Zaragoza Airport (ZAZ) is a compact single-terminal airport handling around 500,000 passengers a year, so the rental side is quick and the queues rarely build. The airport has one passenger terminal, opened in 2008, so you do not have to worry about transferring between buildings - all procedures are in one place.
The terminal has the departure zone on the upper floor and the arrival zone on the lower floor. After you collect your bags and exit the baggage hall, you reach the general hall where the car rental desks, cafes and taxi and bus exits are. Everything is on one level, so the walk from the carousel to the desks takes a couple of minutes.
One thing to check before you book: not every supplier hands the car over inside the terminal. Some keep their cars in the airport car park a short walk away, and a couple meet you at a marked parking spot rather than a desk. Your voucher states the exact pickup point for the company you booked - read it before you land.

Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Have your voucher, passport or ID card, a driving licence held for at least a year, and the booking card ready at the desk. There is only one terminal and the car hire desks are in the arrivals hall, usually open between 08:30 and 22:30, though this varies between suppliers. If your flight lands late, check your supplier's closing time before you book, as a missed pickup is hard to recover at a small airport.
Most companies at ZAZ offer a key-drop service for after-hours returns, so you can leave the car and keys in a drop box even when the desks are closed. Confirm this on your own booking if you are dropping off early or late. Inspect the car for existing scratches and photograph them before you drive off. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young-driver surcharge, and the minimum age is generally 21.
ZAZ sits west of the city, about 17 km and a 20-minute drive from the centre. The airport is well connected to the road network: the A-2 motorway links Madrid and Barcelona, and the AP-68 runs to northern Spain and the Basque Country. You join the N-125 from the airport roundabouts and pick up the motorway within a few minutes, so you can head straight onto the A-2 without going into the city at all.
Low-emission zone (ZBE) - good news for rentals
Zaragoza's low-emission zone in the Casco Historico became enforceable on 12 December 2025. Restrictions apply Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 20:00; weekends and public holidays are not restricted. The good news: cars hired in Spain already carry a DGT environmental sticker (B, C, ECO or 0), which is exactly what the zone requires, so a rental picked up at ZAZ can drive into the centre with no extra paperwork. The EUR 200 fine targets older, non-compliant cars without a sticker, not your hire car.
When you return, fuel up before the airport - the nearest petrol station is about five minutes away - then follow the car-hire return signs to your supplier's parking spot. If you plan to drop the car one-way in another city such as Madrid or Barcelona, flag it when you book rather than at the desk, as it is priced separately.
