Desks in one terminal
SCQ runs a single terminal, so every car hire desk is in the same arrivals hall.
No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Most driving from SCQ is motorway - the AP-9 to the coast and the A-54 inland. Pick by group size and distance, not by looks.
Small & budget
Cheapest off the plane and easy to park in Santiago's old town. Fine for two.
Automatic
In short supply across Galicia, so reserve before you fly if you need one.
7-seater & van
Room for the family and luggage on the run down to the Rías Baixas.
Luxury
Start the Galicia trip in something larger straight from arrivals. Deposits run higher.
Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ) is the main gateway to Galicia, sitting at Lavacolla about 12 km east of the city. The airport is located in the parish of Lavacolla, 12 km east of Santiago de Compostela and handled 3,640,664 passengers in 2024.
One thing to know if you are booking soon: on 23 April 2026 through 27 May 2026 the airport was closed to all air traffic for major runway renovation. Flights have resumed, but check your departure is confirmed before you finalise the rental dates.
All services and operations are concentrated in a single main terminal, which operates 24 hours a day. That keeps the pickup simple - there is no terminal to second-guess. Car hires at Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ) are located in the main terminal. The car hire desks are in the Arrivals area just after Baggage Reclaim.
The cars themselves are not all parked in the same spot. Some suppliers hand you the keys at the desk and point you to the car park a short walk away; others run a shuttle to an office just outside the airport. Your voucher names the exact pickup point for the company you booked - read it before you land.
Suppliers at SCQ
The exact desk and pickup point for your booking is always on your rental voucher - check it before you fly.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Have your voucher, passport, a driving licence held for at least a year, and the booking card ready - it keeps the queue short after a long flight. Most of the car hire firms operate from 08:00 to 22:00, seven days a week. A number of them operate reduced hours on weekends and midweek. They finish on these days at 16:30. If you land outside those hours, check your supplier's closing time before booking. If you do arrive during out-of-hours there will be a drop-box for your keys.
Inspect the car for existing scratches and photograph them before you drive off. Minimum age and young-driver rules vary by supplier - some require the main driver to be 25, while others rent to drivers aged 21 to 24 on smaller groups with a surcharge.
The airport is located to the east of the city and is easily accessible via the Autovía A-54 (Autovía del Aeropuerto) and Autopista AP-9 (Autoestrada do Atlántico). Follow signs for the A-54 towards Santiago and you are in the city centre in roughly 15 to 20 minutes.
From the airport, the AP-9 opens up the rest of Galicia without going through the city. Nearby Autopista AP-9 connects the airport directly to A Coruña (66 km), Ferrol (88 km), Pontevedra (75 km), Vigo (100 km) and the Portuguese border. A Coruña is roughly an hour north and Vigo about an hour and a quarter south - each. The AP-9 is a toll road; the A-54 inland towards Lugo is toll-free.
Low-emission zones - no problem for your hire car
Galician cities are smaller than Madrid or Barcelona, so low-emission zones are limited, but Santiago and the larger towns are rolling them out. It does not affect you: cars rented in Spain already carry the DGT environmental sticker the zones require, so a car picked up at SCQ can drive into the centre with no extra paperwork. The registration hassle and fines target older or foreign-plated private cars, not your rental.
Fuel up before the airport, as the on-site station is pricier than the ones on the approach road, then follow the "rent a car" return signs to your supplier's bay. You'll see signs for vehicle hire parking on approach to the airport. Follow these and find a parking bay. After you remove your personal belongings, simply return to the car hire desk and exchange paperwork and keys. Your car will receive a quick check by staff and you can depart. For an early or late flight, check whether your supplier offers a 24-hour drop-box return.
All in one terminal. The desks sit in the arrivals area just past baggage reclaim.
Some suppliers keep their cars in the airport car park a short walk away, while others shuttle you to an office just outside the airport. Your voucher states the exact pickup point.
Most firms run roughly 08:00 to 22:00, and some close earlier at weekends, around 16:30. If your flight lands outside those hours, check your supplier's closing time before booking.
Out of hours there is usually a key drop-box, but staff will not be there to hand over a car.
About 15 to 20 minutes via the A-54. For the coast, the AP-9 runs straight from the airport, putting A Coruna about an hour north and Vigo around an hour and a quarter south without going through the city.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
To avoid a hold, choose a full cover or no-deposit rate - then a debit card is usually fine and there is no pressure to buy extra cover at the desk.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup in the terminal.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect at SCQ and return in Santiago de Compostela, A Coruna or Vigo.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across Spain. Automatics are in shorter supply and cost more, so book one well ahead if you need it. The same applies to 7-seaters in summer.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
