No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Airport & city pickup
Desks at the airport and in the city centre.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Most driving here is short hops on the ME-1 and narrow lanes down to the coves. Pick by group size and how rough the beach track is, not by looks.
Economy
Cheap to run and easy on the narrow town streets and the lanes to the south coves.
Automatic
Easier in town traffic in summer. Automatics are limited on the island, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with room for beach kit and the airport run.
Luxury
Comfortable for longer days touring the island. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Ciutadella sits at the western end of Menorca, and the old town itself is small enough to walk - the cathedral, Plaça des Born and the harbour are all a few minutes apart on foot. The value of car rental in Ciutadella is everything outside the centre: the south-coast coves, the island's other towns, and the beaches that no bus reaches.
There is no train or metro on Menorca, so it's easiest to navigate your way around the island by car. The public bus connects the main towns but runs to a timetable, and the better coves need their own approach road.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Most of the best beaches are short drives south and east. Cala en Turqueta, one of the best beaches on the island, takes about half an hour from Ciutadella via the Camí de Cala en Turqueta. Cala Macarella sits just along the same stretch of coast, and Cala Galdana is 26 km from Ciutadella.
For the prehistoric sites, the Naveta des Tudons tomb sits on the ME-1 at km 40, dating back to 900 BC. The island capital is the longer run: the journey from Ciutadella to Mahon takes around one hour along the ME-1, with junctions for towns like Ferreries and Es Mercadal on the way.
One Menorca quirk worth planning around: simply looking at a map is misleading, because to reach some south-coast spots you have to go north to the ME-1, then back south to the coast - a journey that looks like five minutes can take 45. Read the road, not the straight line, before you set off. There is no low-emission zone on Menorca, so a hire car can drive anywhere on the island.
The historic centre is largely pedestrianised, and the old Born square car park closed to traffic in 2025, so plan to leave the car on the edge and walk in. Most car parks in the town are free.
Useful free options sit a 5 to 10 minute walk from the cathedral: the large Parc d'estacionament on Avinguda Josep Mascaró Pasarius, the lots near the port, and street parking on the outskirts. In the summer months of June to September parking gets much harder, and beach car parks fill as early as 8am. Go early or be ready to circle. On metered blue-zone bays you buy a ticket from the machine or an app.
Driving notes for Menorca
Spring and early autumn are the easiest. Really good deals are possible in the shoulder-season months of May, June and October, while the supply and demand of summer sees prices rise and fewer cars available for last-minute rentals. In peak summer you should budget EUR 45 to EUR 80 per day for a short rental of one to three days.
July and August also book out the automatics and 7-seaters first, so reserve those several weeks ahead. Winter is the cheapest stretch and still works for touring the island, though the beach season is over.
The old centre is pedestrianised, so leave the car on the edge and walk in. Most town car parks are free, including the large Parc d'estacionament on Avinguda Josep Mascaró Pasarius, a 5 to 10 minute walk from the cathedral.
In summer they fill early, so go first thing or be ready to circle.
Cala en Turqueta is about half an hour by road and Cala Galdana around 26 km.
Distances look short on a map, but the coves are reached by narrow lanes off the ME-1, so allow more time than the straight-line distance suggests.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Taking the car by ferry to Mallorca, Ibiza or the mainland must be agreed with the supplier in advance, and not all of them allow it.
It is often simpler to hire a separate car on the second island. If you plan a ferry, check the terms with our support team.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Ciutadella and return in Mahon or at the airport.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across Spain. Automatics cost more and sell out first, especially in July and August, so book one early if you need it.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
